Vector Addition

Components (Polar to Rectangular)

Before finding components of vectors, change the modes of the calculator to the values shown below.

Be sure to change the mode Vector Format to RECTANGULAR. Press Enter to save.

The RECTANGULAR format of the TI-92 are represented by the bracket format

[magnitude, direction (angle)] .

To find the components of a vector that has a magnitude of 10 and points to an angle of 30 degrees, enter

[10, Ð30]

and press Enter. To place the angle sign before the 30, press the 2nd key then F.

The x-components is 8.66 and the y-component is 5. Find the components of the vectors below.

The solutions are shown below.

Components (Rectangular to Polar)

Change the mode from RECTANGULAR to CYLINDRICAL.

Press Enter to save.

Vectors in CYLINDRICAL format are represented by

[x-component, y-component]

To find the magnitude and direction of a vector that has an x-component of 5 and a y-component of 10, enter

[5, 10]

and press Enter.

Find the magnitude and direction of the vectors below.

Ax = 10, Ay = 10

Ax = -10, Ay = 10

Ax = -8.66, Ay = -5

Ax = 5, Ay = -12

The answers are shown below.

Vector Addition

The TI-92 lets you add vectors in the same way that you add numbers. For example, to add the vectors below,

enter [10, Ð30] + [8, Ð10]

If you change the mode to RECTANGULAR the result will be the x and y components of the resultant.
