Memory Topics:
The memory window shows the total
memory allocation set aside for each type of variable To check
the current memory. Press the
The window above shows the current
memory allocation in my TI-92 calculator. I currently have 26,428
bytes of free memory space. Most of the memory is used by the
system and stored programs. All variables stored in the TI-92
memory fall into one of the categories shown on this screen.
To see how the memory changes, follow
the procedure below. We will store a number as a variable. Before
we start, check the memory allocated to the system and expressions.
I currently have 36 bytes used for expressions and 67,019 bytes
used for the system..
1.) Press the ESC key and return
to the Home page. 2.) To assign the number 1.234 to the variable "x", type 1.234 and press the STO
button (located to the right of the
2nd button). This will place an arrow next to the number
1.234. Then type an x and press ENTER. Now the variable
a is assigned the value 1.234.
3.) To see what affect assigning the letter x, the number 1.234, has on the memory, go
back to the memory window. Look
at the number next to Expr. The number should have increased
by 12. Press ESC to go back to the Home screen.
Once a variable is stored in memory,
it can be manipulated as a number. Press x then enter. The output
is 1.234.
4.) Multiply the variable x times 5. Type in 5x and press ENTER. You do not need a
multiplication symbol next to the
5. (But you must insert a multiplication symbol when multiplying
two variables.)
5.) Store the number 2 as the variable
"abc". Type 2, press STO, the press enter.
6.) Multiply the variable x times abc. Type x, then a multiplication symbol, then abc.
If you do not insert a multiplication
symbol, the calculator accepts the entry xabc as a variable.
7.) It is important to clear variables often especially if you run a lot of programs.
Once a variable is stored in memory,
it will stay there until cleared. Fortunately there is an easy
way to clear all one character variables. Press F6 (Clear
a-z).
When you press Enter, only the one
character are variables cleared from memory. Other multiple variables
can be cleared by using F1 (RESET) from the memory window
(not recommended at this point) or editing them from the VAR-LINK
window. If you go the home screen and now type an x, only an
x will appear as an answer.
VAR-LINK
Press
The VAR-LINK screen will show you
the individual variables and the amount of memory used by each.
Next to each variable, there is a three of four letter symbol
describing the type of variable. The variable types are listed
below. Type - Description
You should see abc and a value
next to EXPR under the MAIN folder.
There are two techniques that can
be used to clear the variable abc. One method is to highlight
the expression and pressing the delete F1 (Manage)
The other delete is to press F1
and 1: Delete.
The other options under the F1 tab
allow you the ability to create new folders, copy or rename variables
and lock and unlock variables. F2 (View)
The F2 (View) tab allows you the
ability to customize the folder a variable views.
F3 (Link)
The F3 (Link) tab is used to send
and receive variables between TI-92 calculators.
Transfer Procedure 1.) Connect the two TI-92 calculator through the I/O port. Use the connection cable
that is supplied with the calculators.
2.) The calculator that is to receive the file(s), must be set to 2: Receive. If the
connection is made properly, the
bottom of the screen should say VAR-LINK: WAITING TO RECEIVE.
If you get the screen below, press the connection cable in firmly
and redo procedure 2.)
3.) Put a check mark on each variable that you would like to transfer from the
sending calculator. Press F3
(Link) then 1: Send.
4.) The file(s) will be transferred.
(Note: You do not use this option
when using the TI-GRAPH LINKS program. F4 (Ö)
The F4 tab puts a check next to variables
or folders.
This option is used if you want to
operate on multiple variables. F5 (All)
The tab F5 gives selection options.
F6 (Contents)
A variable can be viewed by highlighting
it an pressing F6 (Contents)
