TI-GRAPH LINK files for Excel

With the use of the TI-GRAPH LINK program, data can be transferred between the computer and TI-92 calculator. This worksheet is designed to show how to create a data file with the TI-92 calculator and transfer it to the spreadsheet program Excel.

1.) First create a new data file using the TI-92.

2.) In the main folder, create a data type file named links press ENTER twice.

3.) Enter the following data in the links table.

4.) Press 2nd then Q (Home) to save the data. View the data from the VAR-LINK window.

The data file links is in the MAIN folder. Press the Escape key (ESC) to back to the Home Screen. The TI-GRAPH LINK program requires that the TI-92 not have the VAR-LINK window open before it can transfer files.

5.) Run the TI-GRAPH LINK program. To transfer the data file from the TI-92 to the computer, select Receive from the Link menu.

If the calculator is properly connected to the computer, the program will read all of the files on the calculator.

6.) The next window will show the calculator directory.

Double click on the links.92C file then click OK to transfer the file. Select a directory on the computer to place the file.

The program will indicate if the file was successfully transferred.

7.) Select File then Open.

Find the links.92c file and click OK.

The TI-GRAPH LINK program will open the data file in a new window.

In order to open this file with a spreadsheet program, it must first be converted from a TI-92 file to an ASCII text file.

8.) Select the Export ASCII data option from the Tools menu.

The next window will prompt you to name the export file as links.txt. Click OK.

The file is now saved as the text file links.txt.

9.) Run a spreadsheet program and open the file. I will use the program Excel 5.0.

The text file is not formatted correctly for Excel. When Excel tries to open an unformatted text file it prompts a Text Wizard to help with reformatting. If you are using a spreadsheet (like Microsoft Works) that can open this type of text file, it will immediately open.

The format change that we must make to the file is to change the commas to columns. Press Next. Click the appropriate box(es).

Press Next.

Press Finished.

10.) The data is now transferred to the spreadsheet.
