Here is a small selection of databases available to NYS employees from the State Library:

• Project Muse (Scholarly full-text articles in the arts, humanities, mathematics, and social sciences)
• American History & Life (Articles from full-text journals covering pre-history to the present)
• Sanborn Maps (Digital maps, 1867 – 1970 of towns and cities in New York)
• America’s Historical Newspapers (Early American newspapers, 1690 – 1922, including many from NYS)
• Biological Abstracts (Abstracts & indexing of life science journals in biology, botany, ecology, pathology & veterinary medicine)
• PsychInfo (Abstracts & indexing of journal articles from 1887 – present)
• JSTOR- Arts & Sciences Collection/ JSTOR- Sciences (Extensive backfiles of scholarly journals in full-text)

To apply for a card: To remotely access the electronic resources of the State Library, email nyslcirc@mail.nysed.gov and ask for a state employee borrower’s card. An application will be mailed or emailed to you. Fax or mail the application back with a photocopied pay stub and a copy of your Alfred State College ID. Note that a more limited selection of databases is available to NYS residents.

New York Public Library

Some of the databases available from the New York Public Library:

• Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry (full-text poems and more)
• Facts on File History Database Center (Includes World History Online, Ancient History & Culture, American Women’s History, African American History & Culture, and American Indian History & Culture)

  To apply for a card: NY residents (including college students attending school in the state) are eligible for a card that will allow remote access to NYPL databases. Link to the NYPL website; under the picture of the “Branch Libraries – Circulating Collections” card, click on “Apply for a library card”.
