Alfred State College offers two online health information management programs:

·          Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology/Medical Records (HIT).

·          Certificate in Coding & Reimbursement Specialist (CRS).

Students who successfully complete the HIT program are eligible to take the national certification examination to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Students who successfully complete the CRS program are eligible to take the national coding certification examinations offered by the AHIMA (e.g., CCA) and the AAPC (e.g., CPC-A). (For information about certification exams, visit the http://www.ahima.org and http://www.aapc.com Web sites.)

Health information management professionals are responsible for managing patients’ health information. Their primary function is to ensure that all the information collected about an individual is complete, accurate, and protected, yet at the same time, readily available for healthcare providers when needed.

 Health Information Technology

Health Information Technology professionals are responsible for maintaining components of health information systems consistent with the medical, legal, accreditation, and regulatory requirements of the health care delivery system. The health information professional maintains, compiles and reports health information data for reimbursement, facility planning, marketing, risk management, utilization management, quality assessment and research; abstracts and codes clinical data using appropriate classification systems; and analyzes health records according to standards.
