John Buckwalter's Homepage
I am Professor of Biology in the Physical & Health Sciences Department
at Alfred State College (also
known as SUNY College of Technology at Alfred). Courses I have recently
taught include Botany, General Biology, Genetics,
First Aid, Applied Chemical Principles, and Introductory Chemistry.
In the rest of my life, I am husband to Laurel (
music instructor and carillonneur
at Alfred University ), and father
of five daughters.

Janna is a vocational counselor for the Allegany
Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse in Wellsville, NY.

Rachel was married in July 2004 to Krestia DeGeorge. Rachel and Krestia
currently live in Orono, Maine where Krestia is in a graduate program in
English. Granddaughter Miriam Kestrel was born in Anchorage, Alaska on
May 17, 2009.

Martha married Bradley Davis in August 2005. Bradley completed a master's
degree in biology at Simon Fraser University
in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Martha worked as a geologist for Lorax
Environmental Services, also in Vancouver. Grandson Archer Bradley
was born in Vancouver on November 30, 2009. The family recently moved to
Kingston, Ontario where Martha has started a master's program in geology
at Queen's University.

Jewel married Kevin Aagaard in August 2009. They recently moved to Somerset,
NJ. Jewel is a vocal performance master's student at Westminster
Choir College. Kevin is enrolled in a Ph.D. program in ecology at Rutgers
University, and serves as one of the caretakers of Rutgers' Hutcheson
Memorial Forest.

Esther is a junior environmental engineering major at University
at Buffalo. She spent the fall 2010 semester at Monterey
Tech in Mexico.

My other interests and activities are:

church activities. I am a member of Sojourners
Mennonite Fellowship in Houghton, NY, also attend Union
University Church, Alfred, NY, and am the bookkeeper for New
York Mennonite Conference

music. I enjoy a capella vocal, play the viola, and listen to a
wide variety of styles. I sing baritone in Alfred State's Faculty
Men's Quartet .

outdoor activities. These include hiking, camping, and gardening.

travel. My entire family took a month-long road
trip to Alaska in the summer of 2002. Over spring break in 2006 I co-led
an Alfred State College work crew that participated in post-Katrina
cleanup near New Orleans. I have coordinated and led six tropical ecology
field trips to Costa Rica , in 1999, 2001, 2003

, 2007
, and 2009.
I am planning the next for spring break, March 2013. During the fall 2011
semester I was on sabbatical from Alfred State College and taught at Astrakhan
State Technical University in Russia under a Fulbright grant. I blogged
about my experiences and travel within Russia.
